Technical tunnels are where you start the game, and serve as a tutorial for learning how to play the rest of the game.
If you checked the "skip training" option during character creation, you will instead start at the "Prancing pony" camp, and this location can no longer be visited.
Gameplay[]
As you progress through the map, you'll be taught how to do various things, such as:
- Moving around, including jumping, double jumping, crouching, sprinting and swimming.
- Telekinetically moving objects.
- Using M.A.S. Terminals.
- Lockpicking containers, and hacking terminals.
- Breaking through walls with a crowbar, and kicking down doors.
- Shooting with firearms and energy weapons, and striking with melee weapons.
- Using S.A.T.S.
You'll find various items that will help you with your training, such as a screwdriver for lockpicking, crowbar for breaking through walls, a rechargeable pistol and a 32. pistol. Cogwheels can also be found, which will complete a quest if you collect all 20.
Once you're through all the basic training, you receive enough experience points to level up, and can distribute skill points and a perk point how you like. After that you can either go left to get more advanced training and better rewards in more dangerous situations, or go right to the Surface and continue with the story.
Advanced training[]
Advanced training is optional, but teaches you about some more dangerous aspects of the game, while rewarding you if you succeed. It is very possible to die here, since you have extremely limited medical supplies, skills and weapons.
Some of the things you'll be taught about or encounter are:
- More advanced movement such as ladder jumping, dashing and quickly falling past platforms.
- Fighting stronger foes, such as mole rats, radscorpions, bloatsprites and turrets.
- Hazards such as bear traps, explosives, spiked debris and radioactive water.
- Radiation and how to remove it.
- Sneaking past enemies.
- Aiming your guns above you.
- Spells, which can be used for combat.
- Crafting using a workbench.
You'll find good sources of loot around the place in the forms of gun cabinets, chests and safes, where you might receive strong weapons or skill books and memory orbs.
Bloatsprite nest[]
Some things are very dangerous, even with the information you get. The bloatsprite nest you encounter is no exception, capable of constantly creating new bloatsprites to relentlessly attack you. A few strategies can be used to destroy it or get past with reduced hassle.
One option is charging as fast as you can across the room and up the stairs, breaking down the flimsy walls that get in your way then run past the nest to where the loot is located. However there is a risk that the bloatsprites will constantly try to hit you.
Another option that plays it safer is to break a hole into the room, then stick an energy weapon through the hole and repeatedly fire at the nest. As long as the bloatsprites do not see your character, they will not try to attack you, letting you destroy the nest and deal with the remaining bloatsprites without being attacked.
Radscorpions[]
Radscorpions are another danger, having both a fast, powerful attack that will poison you, and a tough shell that absorbs the damage of weaker attacks. It is recommended to deal with them from range with any weapons that fire single, powerful shots. The 32. pistol, old rifle (if you found one) and telekinetic bullet spell (located elsewhere) are all good ideas. Failing that, staying out of reach while hitting them with a crowbar or similar melee weapon can work.
Quests[]
- To exit - completed by getting to second checkpoint
- Find all cogwheels - find all 20 cogwheels hidden in Technical tunnels
Notable loot[]
- Various weapons, some being unique versions to improve your fighting capabilities.
- Skill books and memory orbs, to improve your skills.
- Telekinetic bullet spell.
- Data discs and other valuables to sell, good source of caps for new characters
